The Art of Deep Work

How many tabs are open on your browser right now? At Methods+Mastery we believe in setting aside a specific time to say “yes” to difficult tasks that require everything you have cognitively.

Hyper-distraction at work is not new news.

Task switching has a cost! 70% of work emails are read within 6 seconds! Open floor plans are the beginning of the end for western civilization>

Still, how many tabs are open on your browser right now?

As David Brooks said, “Don’t try to say ‘no’ to the trivial distractions you find on the information smorgasbord; try to say ‘yes’ to the subject that arouses a terrifying longing, and let the terrifying longing crowd out everything else.”

Methods+Mastery believes in what Cal Newport describes as Deep Work: Setting aside specific time to say “yes” to difficult tasks that require everything you have cognitively.

We are in client service. Our clients come first. You ping, we answer. But to provide revolutionary work that will change your business (alongside work that keeps it humming), we have a two-two-two-step.

  • Two Weeks a Year.
    • Twice annually, the team goes into a “hacker house.” We start with innovation sketches on Monday and present them as working prototypes by Friday.
  • Two Days a Month.
    • We take turns going “OOO” for full days to focus on projects that take more concentration than we can muster between status meetings.
  • Twice a Week.
    • We encourage each employee to take two-hour blocks, twice a week, to lock themselves away and focus on their highest priorities.

We know that the future has less and less room for distracted, shallow work. If we can do it while the TV plays in the background, it will be done by AI in 5-10 years.

Let us do work for you that takes everything we have.
